What about a deep dive into the Sermon on the Mount?

Matthew 5-6-7 are three very significant chapters.  Lots of people say that about lots of Bible passages – usually our favorite Bible verses.

Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount is different.  Matthew 5 begins, “Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him…”  As you read this verse, picture the Exodus:

  • God calling Moses to the top of Mount Sinai.
  • The people gathered at the base of the mountain.
  • God giving Moses the 10 Commandments.

Teach my people, Moses, how they should go into the world bearing my name.  Teach them how to love.  Read Exodus 19:1-3 and feel the similarity.  This connection is more than mere coincidence.

Jesus will tell his disciples, “You heard it said, but I say…”  It’s as if he is reinterpreting (recalibrating, reapplying) the 10 Commandments in light of his arrival.  In light of Jewish disobedience too.  They did a poor job going into the world bearing Yahweh’s name in love – see Commandment #3.

Matthew 5-6-7 can be a Christian manifesto for living in the modern world.
